Front Page Category

A plugin that let you choose posts from one or more categories to appear on the front page.

Description

Front page category is a plugin that let you choose posts in one or more categories to appear on the front page. If there are some category that you don’t want to appear on front page, especially uncategorized one, just simple go to Settings section, click at Front Page Category and uncheck those categories. This is extremely useful useful if you use an automated posting system, or posting through mail. In this case, you can assign these posts to a category of your choice and uncheck it at Front Page Category settings. As the result they don’t appear on the front page, but do appear in a category page.

Installation

  1. Download the zip and unzip the ‘front-page-category.zip’ file into the /wp-content/plugins/ directory.
  2. Activate the plugin through the ‘Plugins’ menu in WordPress.
  3. Visit Front Page Category in Settings section, uncheck categories that you don’t want to show up on front page
  4. View your front page and confirm that your excluded categories are not showing.

Help, there are some posts that won’t obey the rule!

If you save several thousands post, may be some of your very old post (or converted post from other CMS), some of them may not obey the rules due to lack of meta information. Simply copy-paste content to another post, and remove old one.

Hello, I would like to use your plugin in my site, but I’m having a problem with it. I have two categories in my site, and I don’t want one category to appear in the front page but I want it to appear in search results. When I set your plugin in that way, the category is not displayed in the front page, but is also not displayed in search result. Any idea? Thank you very much! San

    Hi, JWall:

Thanks for this plugin – I really appreciate it.

IMHO, the functionality of the plugin seems a bit limited because when a post is in a category, it must be ONLY in the categories checked in the Front Page Category settings page for it to show up. My issue is that I want a post to show on the front page as long as it is in any of the checked categories.

I wrote a work-around for it (in the set_cats_in()) to flip the hide_categories to show_categories and use ‘category__in’ for the query_var. It worked fine, but it messed with my menus when I did that. I thought an even better approach would be to have a checkbox asking for an inclusive/exclusive approach or something along those lines.

I have WordPress version 3.3.1, and every time I try to access the settings page for this, it tell me I don’t have sufficent permissions to do so.

I know this is over a year old, but I was hoping for some support for this still. :)

    Great pluggin!
Waiting for next version if solved what Adan said:

I have Category A & B, and only Category A should be on home page. If a post is in both categories, I would think that it should appear on the home page?

    Thanks

After updating my WordPress to 3.1 the sort order on the homepage on one of my sites was reversed. The oldest post was placed on top of the page. It appears that this is caused by ‘Front Page Category’. For now it is disabled, but I would like to use it again soon. Is an update on the way?

I like the plugin, but am thinking of removing it because of Adam’s point, that if in multiple categories (some shown, some not), it defaults to not being shown. I then find myself removing it from relevant categories just to get it shown (and the plugin should not drive what categories I assign).

A related point: if I have nested categories (eg fruit, then apples and oranges) and I only want one subcat shown on front, do I tick the higher category (because something within it should be shown, or not tick it (because something withing it should not be shown?

Just installed a couple of similar plugins for WordPress 3.0.1 to exclude a post. Front Page Category was the only one that worked for me. Many thanks!

  10. George says:

It works as described except it deleted the excluded category from my widget as well. I am using Category Posts Widget which shows posts from certain categories. This category is not checked on my Front Page Categories Settings and so it was deleted.

    Thanks.
